XXVIII. The Dance of Alyeitalya

Lanenomen loved a maiden,
Loved a fair and pleasant maiden,
Loved a dark-haired forest maiden,
Orusena’s lovely daughter:
Alyeitalya, swan-foot maiden.

Swift and nimble as the red deer,
Dark and graceful as the forest,
Alyeitalya danced with laughter,
Laughed like sylvan waters tripping
Down to join a mighty river.

Alyeitalya danced with laughter.
Lanenomen, watching, loved her.
To the Treian lordlings named her,
Named her as his wife intended.
Greatly Lanenomen loved her.

Bright green was the Hill of Maidens
In those first days Under Starlight
When dimly yet the world remembered
Days unmarred, before the heavens
Shattered in the fall of Vishnarr.

White the feet of Alyeitalya,
Shining like the silver swan-wings
Of those birds which Nankeinela
Set in earth to teach men beauty.
Light she moves upon the hilltop.

Glad the sun shines down upon her,
Taking care not to scorch her.
All the birds have ceased their singing
Save the nightingales, to watch her.
In the sky the swans are winging.

A trumpet-sound to all creation,
So the swans cry to us to hearken:
“It is one of ours who dances,
Dances so that all creation
Stops to wonder at her beauty.”

Malfaloth from his hunting
Ceases, to gaze a while on Alyeitalya.
The stars in heaven, high above us
From their adamantine porches
Look in wonder on her beauty.

Alyeitalya danced with laughter.
Lanenomen, watching, loved her.
From his love and from her laughter
All the mighty line of Sencan
Came, and ruled the Water’s Children.
