Five verses.
Raos, Polestar, high in Heaven—
High in Middle-heaven ruling
Over all the Stars of Midnight
And the wide lands Under Starlight—
Raos watched the Son of Fanhal,
Watched his struggle on the Island.
High in heaven, Stars at Midnight
See my leaguered soul in torment.
Monstrous passions now beset me,
Fierce as all the spawn of Orkon.
See my struggle, come to aid me,
All you Stars of Middle Heaven.
Raos sent a beam of starlight
Down to Fanhal, fair Thoranrai’s
Offspring, loved of Nankeinela.
Fanhal, dreaming, saw before him
What his father Lanenomen
Saw upon the field of battle.
“Make a banner gilt with silver—
Seven swans then set upon it.
Seven swans in flight o’er heaven—
Seven swans will grace your banner.
From these seven, seven battles
Will be granted to your people.”
Fanhal made a silver banner,
Set the swans in flight upon it,
Bore it on the field of battle
When he challenged the invader,
Challenged Orkon, ancient tyrant,
He who doomed us first to bondage.
