XVII. The Sixth Lament: The Mines of Torment

Orkon, hated, came in friendship
Came with many gifts for children.
Brought the lore of sunken Star-land,
Brought the wisdom of the anvil.
Children gladly welcomed friendship,
Named him Parbeas, open-handed.

Refrain: Long we labored in the darkness.
Long we served the black deceiver.
Long we wielded pick and hammer.
Long we suffered in the darkness.
Long our cries went up to heaven.

Afterwards he made another
Offer to the Water's Children:
Gift of woven spells, enchantments,
Death to cheat, increase of power.
The children were deceived and conquered.

Treian monarchs were ensnarled—
Three, descended from the Star-folk
Orkon, hated, lured with power.
Remember still, the Water’s children,
The names of those who sold their people.

Yet we do not choose to name them,
Only call them by these curses:
Irakan, with venom dripping;
Orat, terrible of aspect.
Snamoel with fat was heavy,
Fat with the sorrows of his people;
Teigal and Teitklet, those two were brothers,
But sold their brethren into slavery.
Never may their souls find solace.

We were made to mine the iron,
We were made to mine the Hurpalb.
Long did Orkon build his empire
From the stones of Treian cities,
His fields were watered with our weeping.
We were taught the way of sorrow,
Those who would not bend in worship
Of the darkness, we remember.

Some were bowed, and some gave worship
Willingly before the power
Over death which Orkon mastered.
These, the Ambori remember:
The Nalshbori, a people hated
By the water and the starlight—
By the blood that runs within them.
Never may their souls find solace.

Long we suffered in the darkness.
Long we beat out chains of iron.
Long we dreamed that Nankeinela--
Maker both of earth and heaven--
Looking down upon our sorrow
Would send some one into our bondage
A king to lead, a smith to hammer
Bitter chains into a scepter.
