XXV. The Fourth Prayer of Hasanyah

To my heart.

The world is weary of its groaning.
Pain, creation’s close companion
Pollutes and purges, fills the waters
Of the rivers Under Starlight
And carries sorrows to the Sea.

My heart is weary of this groaning,
Weakly bearing the weight of sorrow
It lingers long upon the highway
Which beside the silver waters
Swiftly runs down to the Sea.

The City labors, long in groaning,
Sighing with the pangs of labor,
New life giving, empire building,
Making for the heirs of Sencan
A kingdom reaching to the Sea.

My heart has labored long with groaning,
Building little client kingdoms,
Setting little tyrants in them—
Tyrants, but their small ambitions
Cannot bear me to the Sea.

Far below, the earth is groaning—
Groaning with the pangs of labor.
Deep within her something, growing,
Waits to burst forth, like the waters
Which spring and run to find the Sea.

Like the earth, my heart is groaning.
Deep within me, some true person
Strains against its long confinement.
That true person, my heart knowing,
Longs to bring me to the Sea.
