I. Verses for the Four Odes on Feihothanral, to be used in Ferial Seasons

Eight verses.

Long ago, in timeless ages,
High above the Western Ocean
Feihoth looked upon an Isle,
Green and shining in the Ocean—
Gleaming like a precious emerald
Long ago, in timeless ages.

Once when Feihoth on that Isle
Looked with love, his heart with longing
Filled and wept, for Under Starlight
Many lands were lying empty.
Many lands were lying empty
When Feihoth looked upon that Isle.

Then fair Reinfal, Western Jewel,
Over Western Ocean brooded
Like a dove, and full of longing,
Brightly shone upon that Isle.
Bright the light upon that Isle
Long ago, in timeless ages.

Then a war in ancient Heaven
Sundered Middle-Heaven’s order—
Sundered Heaven’s perfect order—
And the lands were split beneath it:
Chasms rent and isles broken
By the war in ancient Heaven.

Reinfal looked upon her Isle
Fearing warfare would destroy it.
Fanhal stood his guard in Heaven,
In the Western skies above us.
Fanhal did not answer Raos,
Did not heed his battle-summons.

Then the Stars of Middle-Heaven,
Long ago in ancient ages,
Said unto the mighty champion
Raos, Polestar, strong in battle:
“Feihoth came not at your summons,
Did not aid us in that hour.”

“Feihoth stood aloof from conflict,
So you say, and say it truly;
Not for any love of Vishnarr
Did he refuse the call to battle,
But he feared the scars of warfare,
Rack and ruin of western Isle.”

So unto the Isle of Longing
Raos sent the western Star-host:
Fanhal, Reinfal, bright Ramosa,
All the fathers of the Treians.
Heaven moved by deepest longing
Long ago, in timeless ages.
