VII. Verses for the Four Odes on the Feast of Weixranbo

Four verses.

She spoke the name and woke the sleeper.
Then the voice of ancient music,
And the song of love awakened,
Filled the deep and cold abysses
Where the waters churn in darkness.

Deep and long that ancient music
Ringing like a hunter’s bugle
High and piercing, clear as crystal,
Filled with sadness, and with longing—
Filled with all the joy of lovers.

Long he brooded, long he watched her,
He whom last of Stone-kings fathered
With a daughter born of mortals,
Long he brooded on the sorrows
Seven swan-folk long had suffered.

But he spoke no words unto her,
Wordless music singing deeply,
A song to break the heart of mortals.
Fair Feiala knew his longing,
Many lives she lived and suffered.
