Eight verses.
Lanenomen, our first father,
Youngest son of Hagnor’s household,
Fell in battle on the Isle
On which the Western Starfolk, loving,
Had descended, there to rule—
But their heirs forgot the Maker.
Youngest son of Hagnor’s Household,
Mighty warrior of his people,
All who saw him loved his beauty—
Loved his vigor and his valor,
Loved his modest care and reverence,
Loved his piety towards father.
Mighty son of Hagnor’s household—
Most of all he loved his sister,
Star-eyed Kanle, fairest maiden,
She for whom the whole of Starland
Shed its blood in bitter conflict;
Civil strife, the ruin of nations.
Lanenomen, our first father,
Youngest son of Hagnor’s household,
Fell in battle on the Isle—
Fell defending Kanle’s honor
In the war with the Usurper.
Raos came and found him dying.
Lanenomen led a people,
Led the remnant of his people
From the wrath unleashed by Heaven
On the Isle of the Treians.
To the Bay of Bitter Ice-floes
Lanenomen brought his people.
Lanenomen learned deep wisdom
In the chasm which the Heavens
Sundered in their ancient conflict.
There he walked and bested giants,
Learned deep sayings from the monsters—
Formless things in darkness creeping.
Lanenomen built a city:
Lanenkarr of shining towers.
There the Children of the Water
Knew his peace and loved his precepts.
So his people were established,
And the memory of Starland.
Lanenomen taught us wisdom:
How to forge the ruddy iron,
How to plant the corn at Sprintime.
Many laws did Lanenomen
Sitting on his throne of ivory
Give unto a grateful people.
