Verses for the Lamentations, to be sung at the Midnight Song: IX. On the Fast of Weixranbo

Five verses.

Fair Feiala, ancient Priestess
Once descended, after washing
Heroes’ corpses, over-eager
Warrior who against the Darkness
Fell alone in deadly combat.
We have heard their fame in battle.

Geilarjana, how they loved him,
How the maidens of the Isle
Loved to see his nodding horsehair,
Helmet-crest, amid the melee
Which for sport the youths in contest
Wages upon the rocky Isle.

“Nevermore the maidens gladden,
Nevermore your famous father
Will you please with deeds of warfare,
Raise his name unto the heavens.
Now your youthful, manly ardor
Brings you down to deep abysses.”

Famous maiden, Yalyan mighty,
She who wielded shining spear-point
In the day of deadly trial,
She who stood against the horrors
Which the Bed of Serpents showed her—
Little has her valor earned her.

All the love of mighty Fanhal
She had lost before the battle,
In the greener days when Reiran
(Queen most blessed, beloved of Children)
Fanhal’s heart with beauty conquered,
Kept with love against all others.
